Qualifying - T-Jay Qualified 8th overall but could have easily put it on pole, but unfortunately got caught up in traffic on his last 2 flying laps. British Championship Grand Final- 3rd overall T-Jay started 8th on the outside of the grid always a danger at Kimbolton, However T-Jay made a space and got to the inside for turn 1 and came out in 5th, as the race then started to settle down T-Jay picked his way to the front taking one by one untill he led the race. The lead then changed hands 2 or 3 times untill lap 12 when T-Jay took the lead and led until lap 18 with 2 laps to go and a train of 3 Karts behind him knowing if 1 past they would all get through, T-Jay tried his best to hold on but through they came putting T-Jay back to 4th, The last lap board was now out and Trevyn made his move back into 2nd then tried for 1st but the other drivers were still coming strong and 1 managed to pip T-Jay to the finish line. T-jay crossed the finish line less than 2-10ths of a second in 3rd place but could have easily have won. Rowrah promised a big weekend for Trevyn, the Cumbria circuit being renowned as a drivers track has always been a happy hunting ground for the nine year old Ulster kid T-Jay Nelson.
And on Friday and Saturday practice Trevyn was true to form, either bang on the pace or setting it. On race day morning in the pre-race practice sessions all looked well for Trevyn, with our man being at the top of the time sheets.
Heat 1 - Starting position 22nd and reached 4th spot
Trevyn was really revved up for heat 1, and starting at the back of the grid is T-Jay's speciality. He took just five and a half laps to climb to fourth position, a mighty feat against the country's finest young drivers. However, Trevyn wasn't to see the chequered flag after an over audacious move from Alex Gill took Trevyn out of the race, leaving T-Jay with a zero points finish for that race and Alex Gill with a heat disqualification.
Heat 2 - Finished 8th with ailing motor
Cadet racing requires that synthetic racing oil be used on race days, despite all competitors testing with castor oil to prolong engine life. This leads to serious problems with reliability and consistency, and this time Trevyn was to suffer from an overheating engine meaning he had to settle for eighth spot.
Trevyn understands how professional racing drivers have to make the best of the equipment they have on the day, and did a splendid job of managing his engine under difficult circumstances to bring it home with good points. These points would become important to make sure he made the A-final after being taken out in heat one.
Heat 3 - Started 6th and finished 2nd
With a fresh motor Trevyn was back on form in heat three and from sixth position at the start quickly made his way to the front. However, Trevyn's motor was still not able to keep pace on the straights with some, and T-Jay had to concede his lead. Unable to do anything about the pace of the leader Trevyn resisted his urge to make a risky overtake and settled for second, further signs that young Trevyn is maturing into a driver considering his long term championship aims. Remarkable since he's still only nine!
Final - Nursed his kart home in 14th, after starting 20th
Trevyn did extremely well to qualify straight into the a final, especially since other familiar front runners with similar reliability issues didn't make it including the Super 1 and British Champions.
Trevyn made a characteristic great start and quickly passed six karts until suddenly his engine lost power and revs due to the carburettor problems that had plagued so many drivers on race day. It would be easy for Trevyn to throw in the towel by now, but instead Trevyn fought to keep his position as if it was the lead and brought his rather sickly engine home in fourteenth position.
Trevyn's team were proud to see him keep his chin up and show such maturity on a difficult day, and with the strong possibility that the ruling bodies will eliminate the use of synthetic oils for race day, Trevyn will be sure to carry his practice pace into race day. We can't wait!!

Rookie! T-Jay in his first A Final in Stars of Tomorrow Trevyn had been looking forward to Stars all year, as he was too young last year to compete. You must be 9 years old and have raced for a year before entering, so this would be Trevyn´s Rookie year in Stars of Tomorrow, last year T-Jay had the perfect grounding coming 15th in his rookie year at the MSA Super 1 Championship This year the 1st & 2nd rounds where held at PFI in Grantham, a fantastic venue for Karting. Friday Practice. Well we did´nt get off to a great start as we got delayed at the airport in Malaga for 9 and a half hours. Having to try and get as much sleep in the airport as possible, we arrived in England and had to drive straight to the circuit, only missing the first 1 of our sessions. T-Jay was still very tired from travelling, However, managed to put in some very good sessions. |
